Let me start by saying that I was very impressed with The Regel's show at The Cubby Bear. It's always a little nerve-racking seeing your friend's band for the first time, because what if you don't like their music? But thank goodness I didn't have to worry about that, because they snagged me with their first song "Devil Tonight". I later learned that it's a newer song, but man was I impressed. (Word has it that The Regels are back in the studio this winter, so I know there are many people eagerly awaiting a new album in 2006).
Now I was given the challenge of trying to figure out who they sound like, and although I don't claim to know every band out there, I have listened to my fair share of music. I can honestly say, they don't really sound like one type of band. I would classify them as rock and roll, with a bit of southern/blues sound layered in. The harmonica was a great addition to the music, and I hope to see it in more songs down the road.
I think anyone at the bar would admit that there is an easy, undeniable stage presence with The Regels. Perhaps it's Jimmy's towering figure, or the bright, teal blue of his guitar, either way, when they are on stage they have everyone's undivided attention. I did many scans of the crowd throughout the set, and most people were stopping to watch the band. Patrons were ending their conversations and ignoring their cell phones to stand and listen to the music. That says something in itself.
So unfortunately I can't sum them up with a "they sound exactly like..." but I can say that if you like rock and roll, alternative rock, or country rock, you will find a place within The Regels. And although it can be frustrating not having something to compare them too, it's refreshing to have a new sound all unto itself. And as a music lover, I find that very exciting.
