Last night I watched Oprah's "Legends Ball". At first I thought it would be a 'rich celebrating the rich' sort of event, but I was actually surprised at how touching the event was. Basically, Oprah invited all of the women who have inspired her and who have paved a way for future women. These women included authors, singers, actors, activists, and dancers. It really was an incredible experience to see all of these women together in one room.
So it got me thinking about the women in my life and how they inspire me. And how I had no idea when I first met them that they would have such a deep inpact on me and my life. So here's a tribute to those women, and the stories of how we met:
Laine - I met Laine on the first day of work at CDW. It was my first job out of college and I had recently moved to Chicago. We were in a class of about 30 people and we were sitting in seats that had been arranged alphabetically by last name. So we sat next to one another. We were told to do a little ice-breaker exercise by turning to the person next to us and telling them something about ourselves that no everyone knows. I told Laine I have a tattoo on my lower back. She told me she was getting married on June 9th. And we've been best friends ever since.
Karla - I actually heard about Karla before I ever met her. I had been living in Los Angeles for about 4 months when I was told that I would be transferring job locations out to Pasadena. I was upset because I had just started to make friends at The Grove and didn't want to have to leave. My friend, Piper, told me about a woman named Karla who worked C.S. at Pasadena. She said Karla was quiet (but everyone is quiet compared to Piper) and very nice.
So my first day at Pasadena, which was March 17th, Felicity walked me around the store and introduced me to everyone. I remember her walking me into the tiny C.S. office and introducing me to Karla. I remember I liked Karla's hair, and that she kept a really big jug of water next to her computer, and a half eaten bagel was in a baggie next to the keyboard. And the rest is history...
Sadia - It was the first week of work in L.A. and there was an all store meeting. I was asked to introduce myself to everyone and tell a bit about myself. So I sat in front of a crowd of about 25 people and said "My name is Olivia, I'm from Iowa, I got my degree in English and Women's Studies.." and in the back of the crowd I heard a voice say "Hey, I studied Women's Studies!" I just kept on by saying "I really like art, and films, and music. I listen to a lot of Ani DiFranco." and i heard the same voice say "I love me some Ani!" Finally I saw where the voice was coming from and I smiled at the woman who sat way in the back but whose voice made it's way all the way up front, to me. :)
I would also like to mention the following women who inspire me daily: my mom, Angie, Amy B., and Dorothy Woods. Thank you for all that you do.
