Bright Lights Big City

Yesterday, on my lunch hour, my co-worker Melissa offered to walk me around the Loop a bit to show me where some restaurants and things are. It was great to get outside and stretch my legs, even with the chilly fall temperatures settling into Chicago this week.

She showed me where the Potbelly's is, and Union Station, and my bank and then she showed me where CVS is. Remembering I ran out of mascara that morning, I asked if I could pop in to buy a new tube. She said sure! So I headed in to the make-up aisle and was browsing Cover Girl's many selections of mascara when a woman walked up next to me and just sorta stood there. I wasn't paying much attention but did notice that she was looking at a stand of sample body sprays (you know, that cheap, stinky stuff that is supposed to be like a perfume). Next thing I knew, she picked up one and held it up to her ear and sprayed it for about 5 seconds. Then she switched ears and sprayed it again for 5 seconds.

Now she didn't spray it on her neck or behind her ear lobe, she spayed the stuff INTO her ear. It was the most bizarre thing. And it stank up the whole aisle! The crazy lady walked away and a woman standing next to me turned to me and said, "Why did she just do that?!! She sprayed it into her ear!" Then she said, "My god this stinks, I gotta get out of here."

I agreed with her and grabbed one tube of mascara and got the heck out of that aisle before any of that spray sunk into my clothes.

Working in the city is sure to bring on interesting blog posts. :)

My favorite city "oddity" is the Streetwise Newspaper woman who stands at Madison and Dearborn. Every single morning she's out there, eyes closed, singing "Good Morning, Streetwise". Only she sings it like she's an opera singer. In the afternoon she moves over to Madison and Clark and says something else (I can't understand what). It's kind of irritating but you can't really rag on those people. They are just trying to get by.

(For those not in Chicago, Streetwise is a newspaper somehow written (and published?) by the homeless. I think. Homeless men and women sell them on the street corners.)
